Basketball is a uniquely American sport invented in 1891 in Massachusetts by Dr. James Naismith. It has grown exponentially in popularity ever since, never looking back. AYA seizing on the distinctive independent character of the sport offers a recreationally competitive program grounded in the same philosophy established by Dr. Naismith over 100 years ago; namely, an emphasis on proper form and discipline, good exercise and above all, fun.

AYA’s league caters to players 5 to 14 years of age, with the younger age divisions (5 – 9 years) focused on more instructional player development and proper mechanics, while the older age divisions (10 – 14 years) enjoy a more expanded curriculum with an emphasis not only on fundamental mechanics, but strategy and gamesmanship as well.

From extensive research and development, AYA has established their basketball rules so that the novice player can comfortably compete with the more experienced player, while still retaining the recreationally competitive nature of the league.

As always, AYA’s emphasis is on proper development of a player’s skills and mechanics rather than winning. AYA firmly believes that winning is a natural by product of proper player skills development. This is a common thread running throughout the AYA organization and is embedded in each an every sport we offer. There are no short cuts, when it comes to improving a player’s abilities.

The Program

Utilizing experienced volunteer coaches to manage the individual basketball teams, AYA provides professionally taught weekly coach/player clinics, detailing not only what the player/coach should expect from their season in each age division, but the techniques necessary to achieve their optimal performance as an individual and team.
